Education, Construction Inspection & Testing, and Geotechnical EngineeringThe North Idaho Collaborative Education (NICE) facility project includes a new two-story, approximate 29,000 square foot “L-shaped” building at the North Idaho College (NIC) campus on the site of the former DeArmond Stud Mill. Construction included slab-on-grade flooring and a combination of cast-in-place concrete, weathering steel, cedar wood, and brick veneer walls, incorporating structural steel framing where needed. The building is serving as a New Student Welcome Center, University of Idaho office, and Lewis & Clark State College office. The North Idaho Collaborative Education facility contains eight instructional classrooms, a student services center, and numerous student and faculty break-out rooms and informal learning spaces. STRATA provided geotechnical and inspection services throughout the design and construction phases of the project, including observing and documenting mass earthwork grading activities that required 2 to 8 feet of undocumented fill removal associated with the former milling activities.
